Behind the Scenes - Swag Bag Photo

Behind the Scenes-Mortal Path Swag Bag
When working on the photo for the Mortal Path Swag Bag giveaway, I had a little helper who really wasn't very helpful. While I was busy staging the photo, here's what it looked like if you broadened the field of view a bit. Snickers is actually in the final photo, below, just cropped out.

Thanks for your help, Snickers! I couldn't have done it without you.

Interview and Special Giveaway at Bitten by Books

I'm pleased to invite you to chat with me on the Bitten by Books blog on April 2nd. I'll have an interview posted, and I'll be replying to questions and comments all day and into the evening. (Whew!) Show up and make me work for a living instead of just lounging around in front of the computer in my pajamas. For all you know, though, I'll be answering your questions in my PJs. Hah! No video cams allowed.

Famous Swag Bag PLUS $50 gift card
The giveaway for this appearance is extra special. In addition to the popular, desired, and drooled-over Swag Bag (see photo), I'll be including a $50 Amazon Gift Card. It all goes to one lucky winner. As usual, the giveaway is international. You can RSVP in advance right here, right now and earn 25 extra points for the giveaway. You can't rest on your laurels, though. You still have to show up on April 2nd, post a comment, and mention that you RSVP'd.

Are you still here? Why haven't you clicked to RSVP?

Sale! All Mortal Path E-books $4.99!

My publisher, Harper Voyager, put all three e-books in the Mortal Path series on sale to celebrate the release of Deliverance, book 3. Regularly $7.99, they are now priced at $4.99 wherever e-books are sold. You can buy the whole series for $15, if you have an e-reader. I think you should run right out and buy an e-reader just to take advantage of this sale. I might even buy one. :-)

Of course, the lovely paperbacks are a great choice, too. At Amazon, they are part of the buy 4-pay for 3 promotion. Shouldn't be too hard to pick out three other books that have been on your list for a while and get Deliverance free, should it?

My thanks to my editor Emily Krump and my publicist Katie Steinberg, who must have had their hands in this little surprise for me.

Here's a sampling of places to buy Deliverance, but feel free to use your favorite store.

A Pack of Arch Criminals

Arch Criminals (AC) is the name of a group of mystery writers from St. Louis. The main thing we accomplish is to meet once a month for a long lunch. It's a wonderful break from sitting behind a desk! I listen a lot, talk some, and enjoy just hanging out with a group of authors. We meet at the Lewis & Clark's Restaurant in the historic downtown area of St. Charles (on Main Street--can't get more downtown than that) just across the Missouri River from St. Louis County. We have a reserved round table for the ACs who show up that month.

Lewis & Clark's
John Lutz
John Lutz
A few days ago, the faces around the table were Eleanor Sullivan, John Lutz, Christine Matthews, Robert Randisi, and moi. Other Arch Criminals who join us when the mood strikes and time permits are Scott Phillips, Francis Nevins, Michael Kahn, and Eileen Dreyer. Laughter and anecdotes dominated, along with a little writer talk.

Some of those anecdotes dealt with a writer named Albert Nussbaum, a man with an interesting path to a writing career. John and Robert both shared personal recollections.

Eleanor Sullivan
Eleanor Sullivan
Albert Nussbaum was a bank robber in the early 1960s who was on the FBI's Ten Most Wanted List. After eight robberies, he and his partner were caught and Al was sentenced to 40 years in prison for the robberies and a murder that occurred during one of them. (His partner was the shooter.) Al served 14  years, during which he had a lot of time on his hands. He was a very smart man, adaptable to whatever circumstance he ended up in, so he became a writer. After his parole, he wrote for Ellery Queen’s Mystery Magazine, Alfred Hitchock’s Mystery Magazine, and other places. He was prolific, and sometimes had multiple stories in the same magazine under different names. Al passed away in 1996.
Al Nussbaum
Robert Randisi
Robert told a story of attending a convention where he and four other writers were sharing a room at the hotel to save money. The fifth man was Al, who didn't arrive until late at night when the others were sleeping. Robert got a call from the hotel's front desk saying that there was a very tired and irate man who wanted a key to the room, or at least to find out the room number. Robert assured the desk clerk everything was okay and to send him up. When Al arrived, he was exhausted and settled into the first available bed he saw. Trouble was, that was where Robert had already been asleep, and there he stood in his underwear with nowhere to go back to sleep. Requested cots had never arrived. And that's how Robert ended up sleeping in his underwear next to a famous and very real criminal.

I can hardly wait to find out what next month's Arch Criminals lunch meeting brings!

John Lutz is the NYT Bestselling author of SWF Seeks Same, which was made into the movie Single White Female starring Bridget Fonda. His novel The Ex was made into an HBO original movie. His work includes political suspense, private eye novels, urban suspense, humor, occult, crime caper, police procedural, espionage, historical, futuristic, amateur detective, thriller; virtually every mystery sub-genre. He is the author of more than forty novels and over 200 short stories and articles. His current release is Serial, a Detective Frank Quinn novel.

Eleanor Sullivan is a former Professor and Dean of Nursing and has had a nursing career in which she was showered with honors and awards, including testifying before the U.S. Senate. She has published several nursing textbooks, and has turned her hand to fiction now. She has written the Monika Everhardt series of medical mysteries and has started a new project. Her current release is Cover Her Body, a historical mystery set in 1830s Ohio, in a community that is part of her own family history. An amazing history it is, too.

Robert Randisi writes primarily in the detective and Western genres. He has authored more than 500 published books and has edited more than 30 anthologies of short stories. He co-founded and edited Mystery Scene magazine and co-founded the American Crime Writers League. He founded The Private Eye Writers of America, where he created the Shamus Award. His latest project, the Rat Pack series of books about the legendary Hollywood group of Humphrey Bogart, Frank Sinatra, Sammy Davis Jr., Dean Martin, Peter Lawford, Joey Bishop and others from the 1950s-1960s and even later, in various combinations at various times.

Christine Matthews works, in part, as a writing duo with Robert Randisi. They have written short stories and edited anthologies together, as well as written the Gil & Claire Hunt mysteries. As a short story writer, Christine's works have appeared in Ellery Queen's Mystery Magazine as well as many anthologies, which she also edits. Under her real name, Marthayn Pelegrimas, she has written over forty short stories in the dark fantasy, science fiction, and horror genres.

Then there's me, the author of the supernatural thriller series The Mortal Path. Under my real name of Shirley Kennett, I wrote the PJ Gray series of suspense novels that use virtual reality to simulate crime scenes.

More to come on other members of the Arch Criminals ...

Word Cloud for Deliverance

A fun way to look at Deliverance! A word cloud shows how often words appear in a sample of text; the bigger the word in the cloud, the more often the word appears in the text. These are the top 80 words in the manuscript. Even I was surprised by some of these words that made it into the cloud. Some of them are common English words like get, went, want, now, got, and put. But why is one so popular? Or back? Or know? Thank goodness blood, body, man, and knife are in there. I think next time I will try to have the words sword, kill, and kiss on every page.

RT Book Reviews Praises Deliverance!

I'm very pleased with this writeup from Romantic Times Book Reviews!

RT Book Reviews

"Readers might not know this is the third title in a series, so subtle Banks is at providing comprehensive background information. The story is wonderfully unpredictable, full of breathlessly exciting action scenes. With a little bit of mystery, a troupe of interesting characters not lacking for depth and a very satisfying ending, readers will be hooked till the very last page, and then will rush to pick up the others in the Mortal Path series.

"Former demon slave Maliha Crayne has gone rogue, trying to save as many people as she’s killed. But someone wants her to get back into her old ways—by any means possible. When Maliha’s mentor goes missing and parts of his body start showing up in packages on her doorstep, she must decide whether to kill as directed, allow her friend to die or figure out how to rescue him. But with few clues to go on, and unsure whom she can trust, that’s no easy task." - Leah Hansen, RT Book Reviews

Deliverance: Great trailer & review!

I've been getting wonderful comments on the trailer for Deliverance: Mortal Path Book 3, with "one of the best book trailers I've ever seen!" being the most common. Who me, modest? Nah!

Check out the trailer, and if you're interested in a look behind the scenes, click here for information on how I put it together.

The first online review of Deliverance is available at SMITTEN WITH BAD BOY HEROES. It's a great review! Here's a preview:

"Deliverance transports us into another great adventure in Maliha’s quest for redemption.  In my opinion, Ms. Banks has created a second to none but far from perfect heroine in Maliha and really makes us care about her whether she’s successful in her quest. We really want her to succeed and fret when things don’t go right for her. The author's skillful characterization supports some of the most intriguing plots I’ve seen and this series is now one of my favorites, with this novel being the best in the series so far.
Maliha is a mix between James Bond and Catherine Zeta-Jones in the movie Entrapment.  This series is full of suspense and adventures that keep us on the edge of our seat while Maliha and her friends unravel these schemes. The author’s use of mythology and historical events to supplement the story is brilliant." - SMITTEN WITH BAD BOY HEROES

Book Piracy - Please say no

An author friend of mine told me recently that a new fan of hers wrote and told her how the fan was catching up on backlist books by downloading them from a sharing site. "It's okay, though," said the fan. "I paid a fee to join the sharing site."

Uh, no. It doesn't work that way. The fee paid to sharing sites gives you simultaneous, faster downloads and it stays with the site owners. It doesn't pay for the author's work in creating the book. It's as though the author said, "I just sweated bullets for nine months over this novel, but I don't value my skills and my effort. You can have it for free. Go ahead, it's okay."

Of course authors value their work. So do artists and musicians and plumbers. Try explaining to the plumber that you want to pay him once to visit your home and then share his services with twenty neighbors for free. If your plumber is the type with a colorful vocabulary, your answer will be a bright rainbow.

There is the issue that some people say books are overpriced, and in frustration think they should have free access to anything that can be put on the Internet. At least I can see where this attitude might come from. My response is to push the issue with publishers if you feel that way, but recognize that the author's portion you're paying when you buy a book is small.

A typical paperback priced at $7.99 might produce $0.64 for the author for each sale. If the book has 300 pages, you're paying two-hundreths of a cent to read each page. Cheap enough to not only enjoy your established, favorite authors but to try new-to-you ones every now and then. If you had to stand face-to-face with the author and count out two quarters, one dime, and four pennies and hand them over, you'd probably feel it was a good deal. But the Internet depersonalizes the experience and makes it easier to take the author out of the equation.

We can do away with the myth that all authors are rich and don't need their $.64 per paperback. Granted, a small percentage of writers are rich, but most of them got that way by moving up through the ranks (or they started out well off in the first place). The huge percentage of writers remaining (like the 99% of Americans) are dependent on that $.64 for all the costs of living and raising a family.

Enough ranting! I made a badge that I put on my blog to express my views of piracy. Here it is below. If you feel as I do, please help to spread the word. I bought the skunk graphic, but I added the noxious little cloud of gas behind him. ;-) The badge gets its point across in kind of a cute way. Copy the HTML code below the badge and insert it wherever you'd like the badge to appear.

Book Trailer Sampler

I wrote a post about making the trailer for Deliverance on Supernatural Underground, and asked people to mention their trailers in comments. Getting straight to it, here are the fun trailers I picked up.
