Quest is available on NetGalley until 7/8/2026!

I’m thrilled to share that Quest, the final book in the Mortal Path series, is now live on NetGalley! Quest can be enjoyed on its own, even as the final book in the series — I wrote it with new readers in mind.

Description: As the last pieces of the Great Lens surface, Maliha races against time to stop an ancient evil from consuming the world. But the real battle is the one inside her — between the woman she was and the hero she’s fighting to become.

Reviewers, bloggers, booksellers, librarians, educators, journalists, media professionals, and other book‑industry members can request a free digital review copy (ePUB) here: https://www.netgalley.com/catalog/book/840894

You’ll need a NetGalley account to download the review copy. Signing up is free.

⭐ How to request Quest on NetGalley

  1. Create or sign in to your NetGalley account. Click the above link, then use the drop down menu on the upper right of the screen under the image of a person to login or create. When setting up your profile, be sure to select Sci‑Fi & Fantasy as one of your preferred genres. In your Profile Bio, mentioning that you enjoy urban fantasy helps me understand your reading interests.

  2. Search for the book. On your Dashboard, use the search box. Type Quest and select "All of NetGalley" in the dropdown. Quest: Mortal Path Book Four should appear in the results.

  3. Request the review copy before July 8, 2026. Click on Quest, then click the blue Request button. If you’d like to read more before requesting, click See Full Details.

That’s all there is to it!

I’m looking for honest reviews on Amazon, Goodreads, and/or your blog. As an indie‑published series finale, Quest relies heavily on reader support to reach new audiences. Even if you haven’t read the previous books, you’ll find enough context in this one to follow the story — that was intentional.

If you’d like to explore Maliha Crayne’s world, mythology, character arc, and the thread of romance woven through the earlier books, you can learn more at mortalpathbooks.com.

Thank you for supporting this series all the way to its finale.

A Moment in an Author's Life Worth Mentioning

A Moment Worth Sharing: The Book Excellence Review for Quest

Every once in a while, something arrives in your inbox that makes you stop, breathe, and feel the weight of a long journey settle into a moment of quiet gratitude. That happened to me when I received a professional review from Book Excellence for Quest: Mortal Path Book Four.

If you’ve been with me for a while, you know how much this book means to me. It’s the conclusion of a series that has lived with me for years — through drafts and rewrites, through publishing transitions, through the shift from traditional publishing to indie, and through all the life that happens in between. Writing Quest was both a return and a letting‑go, a chance to bring Maliha Crayne’s story to its rightful close.

So when a thoughtful, in‑depth review arrives — one that sees the heart of what you were trying to do — it feels like a small light turning on in a room you’ve been walking through for a long time.

I wanted to share that light with you.

Book Excellence Review

In Quest: Mortal Path Book Four, Dakota Banks brings Maliha Crayne’s long battle against darkness to a powerful and emotional close.

An ancient evil rises with plans to take over the world, and Maliha must stop it by rebuilding the Great Lens: a legendary artifact powerful enough to banish demons forever. But every piece she finds comes with greater danger. Alongside her loyal team, she faces deadly supernatural enemies, and while the external battle is fierce, the deeper conflict lies within Maliha herself. She must confront whether she can truly atone for her past and whether redemption is fully possible. As events spiral toward the final confrontation, sacrifices become unavoidable, and the fate of the Earth depends not just on strength, but on the choices she makes.

Author Dakota Banks skillfully blends urban fantasy with ancient mythology, creating a world that feels both exciting and believable. The structure of the quest to recover the Great Lens keeps the tension building steadily, with each recovered fragment raising the stakes. By the time the story reaches its climax, the ending feels intense, earned, and emotionally satisfying.

In addition, Maliha is a strong, fearless and memorable protagonist. Shaped by centuries of violence and burdened by guilt, she still feels love, doubt, jealousy, and loyalty. Her emotional struggle, especially her battle between self-sacrifice and self-forgiveness, gives the novel its heart. She is not just a warrior fighting demons; she is a woman trying to reconcile who she has been with who she wants to become. Themes of loyalty, sacrifice, responsibility, balance, and romance tie the story together, reminding us that even the fiercest warriors still long for connection and hope.

Fans of supernatural thrillers, dark mythology, and strong female heroes will find Quest deeply satisfying. Dakota Banks gives Maliha Crayne the ending she deserves: one that is thrilling, moving, and unforgettable. - Review by Book Excellence (bookexcellence.com)

Why This Review Means So Much

Reviews come in many shapes — some short and sweet, some analytical, some emotional. What struck me about this one is how deeply it understood the heart of the story. Quest isn’t just about assembling the Great Lens. It’s about assembling a life — piece by piece, choice by choice — and deciding what kind of person you want to be when the world asks more of you than you think you can give.

Maliha has always been a character who carries her past with her, but she also carries hope. Seeing that reflected back in a review is a gift.

And for those of you who have followed her from Dark Time all the way to Quest, this review belongs to you too. You’ve walked this path with me — through the mythology, the danger, the heartbreak, and the redemption. Your messages, your encouragement, and your patience while I brought this final book into the world have meant more than you know.

If You’d Like to Read Quest

You can find all editions — Kindle, mass market paperback, and trade paperback — on my website (https://dakota-banks.com) or through your usual booksellers. I’ve also added a clear navigation link on the blog so you can easily return to the main Dakota Banks website anytime.

And if you’ve already read Quest, thank you. Truly. Your support keeps this world alive.

From the Book's Description

Story 1 - "Last of the Blood"

When the sweet scent reaches me, I know I have found what I'm looking for.

My hands reach out in the darkness to the unaware girl. She's warm and soft, and doesn't even get to scream before I'm drinking deeply from her, her struggles too feeble to bother me.

Only the blood counts.

I've never tasted anything like it. Gloriously sweet, thick and strong, and full of life.

I drink until the hunger subsides, until the body that I hold so close to me hangs lifelessly in my arms. Only then I see. Only then I recognise it, and the agony … oh, the agony is more than I can bear!

Story 2 - "Demonica"

Tonight is the Midwinter Solstice Ball, the most important night in the Daemonic Court's calendar.

This is the night when new disciples are chosen, when demons come out to play, and all bets are off.

As it happens, tonight is also the night I become Queen.

Bites

Irina is about to become Queen of the Daemonic Court and Damon is on the run from his own nature …where will their paths take them?

Two short stories that will seduce you with romance, danger, sensuality … and Vampire bites.

Good News Review

Bites consists of two dramatically different stories, each one a dark and atmospheric gem, a bite of pure reading enjoyment. Ninfa Hayes displays the strength of her writing skills by picking such diverse story lines and succeeding so brilliantly with both.

In "Last of the Blood," Damon Blackwood, born in London in 1896, lives a soulless childhood in an orphanage. Enlisting as a soldier in World War I, he experiences the horrors of war at an early age. One night is different: Damon is approached by a trio of Vampires, led by the powerful Master Gabriel, who recruit him into their Covenant. Damon settles in to his new way of life.

Gabriel says we give them the best time of their lives. They are well fed, well dressed and loved, almost worshipped … until the last drop of their blood slithers down our throat. Then they're nothing more than a nuisance.

I don't know when I stopped caring, and just embraced it; when the last shred of humanity fled in the face of the being I have become.

It feels good not to care.

Gabriel was right to choose me.

Trouble is brewing inside the Covenant. Gabriel becomes obsessed with the Countess Nataliya, whom Damon believes is evil. Gabriel claims Nataliya for his own, making her immortal. Damon feels he can no longer stay with the family he's deeply attached to, and strikes out on his own. The rest of the story covers Damon's travels and his attempt to deal with the chain of events that Nataliya sets in motion.

When I'm about to reach the Underground station, I hear the first sirens and screams. I can sense the Vampire minds stirring ... Tonight, London will run with blood.

As I enter the station, a pain so strong hits me that I fall to my knees.

My eyes are full of tears, and I wail in anguish, as I experience the first Vampire death.

An outstanding, bittersweet story for older YA and adult readers, "Last of the Blood" is a creative and engaging vision of the intimate lives of vampires.

In "Demonica," Ninfa turns her imagination to a legend of origin, a very early time when Eden exists along with humans on Earth. Eden is in a magical location flanked on one side by the home of Darkness, of Lylith and her progeny of incubi, succubi, vampires, and werewolves. On the other side of Eden lies the home of the Light, the Angels, the faithful servants of the Gods. A son or daughter of the residents of Eden is chosen each year to join the Darkness or the Light. The choices made in Eden, over time, will determine the fate of the humans on Earth. Will the Light or the Darkness become more powerful?

The story is told in a refreshing point of view by Irina, a sixteen-year-old girl of Eden whose mother expects her to be chosen by the Light. Irina has her own feelings and desires, though, and from the beginning she and her mother have different expectations.

Every year, Daemons and Angels come for us, to choose the worthiest amongst the Children of Eden and ask them to serve. Good girls go to the Celestial Court, my mother used to tell me … but honestly, who wants to be a good girl when you can have fun?

On the day of the Midwinter Solstice, the knock on the door isn't Irina's betrothed, a boring young carpenter, to claim her in marriage. Instead there's a Daemon at the door, come to claim Irina for the Daemonic Court. It turns out that Irina is no ordinary recruit for the Darkness; she bears a birthmark of a fleur-de-lis, Lylith's mark, on her shoulder. Irina's entrance into the Daemonic Court stirs loyalty and jealousy, and later lands her in the arms of an Angel. There are warring factions on both sides, Angels and Daemons, and Irina's presence triggers momentous events.

In spite of its short length, "Demonica" has remarkable complexity and depth of backstory, and I could see it becoming the start of a series. First, though, I'd like to see it written at novel length to have more time to explore the ideas presented. For older YA and adult readers.

To summarize, I feel that Bites is a terrific debut, a dark pair of stories that will grab and keep your attention. Ninfa has a gift for vivid description that pulls you into the scene. My favorite of the two was "Demonica," although "Last of the Blood" was a close second. I highly recommend Bites and eagerly await more stories from Ninfa Hayes!

Outstanding!

RT Book Reviews Praises Deliverance!

I'm very pleased with this writeup from Romantic Times Book Reviews!

RT Book Reviews

"Readers might not know this is the third title in a series, so subtle Banks is at providing comprehensive background information. The story is wonderfully unpredictable, full of breathlessly exciting action scenes. With a little bit of mystery, a troupe of interesting characters not lacking for depth and a very satisfying ending, readers will be hooked till the very last page, and then will rush to pick up the others in the Mortal Path series.

"Former demon slave Maliha Crayne has gone rogue, trying to save as many people as she’s killed. But someone wants her to get back into her old ways—by any means possible. When Maliha’s mentor goes missing and parts of his body start showing up in packages on her doorstep, she must decide whether to kill as directed, allow her friend to die or figure out how to rescue him. But with few clues to go on, and unsure whom she can trust, that’s no easy task." - Leah Hansen, RT Book Reviews

Introducing ... Ta Da! My other books

In addition to the Mortal Path series, I have written under my real name, Shirley Kennett, for thrillers without paranormal elements. Here's a review of a stand-alone thriller, Burning Rose, from Book Reader's Heaven. I also have a series of suspense novels, the PJ Gray series, featuring a woman leading a team of detectives who use immersive virtual reality simulation of homicides.

The news is that I plan to issue all of these books this summer as reasonably priced e-books. More information to come! Here's a preview with the printed book covers. (The e-books will have different covers, since I don't own this cover art.) In the meantime, see www.shirleykennett.com for information about each book.
